National Shelter Appreciation Week Nov 2-7

[Nov-5-2009]

CELEBRATE YOUR LOCAL SHELTER DURING SHELTER APPRECIATION WEEK NOVEMBER 2-7, 2009 This week community members, animal lovers and grateful pet guardians are invited to come together to celebrate their local shelter. National Shelter Appreciation Week, November 2-7, is the perfect time to recognize the organization in your community dedicated to animals. Here are ten ways to show shelters you care this week and throughout the year: 1. Adopt! Animals are great companions, but pets are a big responsibility and involve a lifelong commitment, so make sure you have what it takes to provide a safe and loving home for your new pet. When you're ready to adopt go to www.petfinder.com, www.1-800-save-a-pet.com, www.greenbrierhumane.org, or visit to find available pets. 2. Visit! Never been inside an animal shelter? Stop by your local shelter between 11-5p when kennels are open and see how things work. Better yet, volunteer! Volunteers are always needed to walk dogs and work with kitties. 3. Every penny helps! Something as simple as donating money or picking up an item on the shelter's wish list during your next shopping trip is also a good way to contribute to animal well-being. 4. Teach your children well. Teach children about the importance of being kind to animals, whether it is a single child or an entire classroom. 5. Be Responsible. Providing quality food, water and shelter is basic, but pet responsibility includes keeping current ID tags, visiting the vet to update shots and making sure he/she is properly confined or supervised while outdoors. Dont forget to give lots of love and attention. 6. Expect the Unexpected. Find out how to help local animals (including your own) in the event of a natural disaster such as a hurricane, tornado or fire, as well as other emergencies and accidents. 7. Keep and eye out. Your local animal shelter and animal control agency not only take in homeless animals, but also rescue injured, abused or neglected critters. Assist them by helping injured animals in your neighborhood, and letting them know if you suspect a case of animal cruelty. 8. Spread the Word. Tell your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors about the importance of supporting animal shelters and their staff. 9. Spay and Neuter! Spaying or neutering pets is one of the most important things you can to reduce the number of homeless pets in your community. Shelters are frequently overcrowded with unwanted pets, so learn more about why spaying/neutering is important and how you can apply for low-cost vouchers from the Greenbrier Humane Society. 10. Two Simple Words. Thank You. Animals cant say it, so send a letter, card or e-mail to your local shelter and let them know you care.
